Keanu Reeves is going viral again, this time for a giggly reaction to a question on NFTs.
While promoting his new film The Matrix Resurrections with co-star Carrie-Ann Moss for The Verge, the interviewer began a discussion on the distinction between the virtual and the real, and how often the line gets blurred these days compared to when The Matrix first came out in 1999. The interviewer asked if either star had seen the Matrix-themed NFT that had been released a few days prior, especially as the website has crashed with 300,000 people had tried to buy 100,000 NFTs.

He went on to talk about the concept of scarcity in the digital marketplace, and how many digital products now cannot be copied, “that are easily reproduced”, Reeves responded, before bursting into fits of laughter, presumably over the irony of the whole concept.

For the uninitiated, NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, are digital media files that are assets and represent real-life items like music, art, videos, or items within video games. They are completely digital, however, and bought and sold via cryptocurrency as collectible items, just like any physical artwork might be. They cannot be copied, apparently – though Reeves disagrees with that.
At another point in The Verge interview, Keanu Reeves does clarify that he owns an amount of cryptocurrency, so is not completely removed or uniformed from what NFTs are. Instead, he just finds them very funny, downplaying their cultural and monetary significance in a way that only Reeves could do without being judged for it.
Considered one of the ‘Good’ celebrities, and an honest eccentric, Reeves has long been known for telling it like it is when it comes to Hollywood and the more unusual aspects of life that many other rich and famous people openly endorse. Reeves hasn’t let money or fame turn his head when it comes down to what matters, and, as often displayed on previous occasions, often has detachment from trends or current pop-culture phenomena.
While NFTs themselves are not new to him, he clearly understands the concept well enough to see the irony in it, especially given the lines blurred between reality and technology within The Matrix movie franchise, and the questions that the films pose as to how far we can push technology, and how much we can blur that boundary.
The internet clearly loved his reaction, as fans took to Twitter in their droves to comment on the interaction and clip the video that it was taken from. Several joked that Reeves had just caused the end of the NFT trading market, while others comment on how priceless the reaction is in a world where concepts and products like NFTs are constantly pushed at us.

Meanwhile, Reeves’s co-star Carrie-Ann Moss looks on, smiling wryly at his amusement over the idea. Clearly, over their years of working together, she’s become used to his antics but is still as amused by them as the rest of us are.
