NFTs with their unique functionalities can make up a fortune for anyone who executes them right. Well, it all worked out perfectly for Benyamin Ahmed, a 12-year-old boy from London. His NFT collection “Weird Whales” earned him NZ$250,000 (USD 160,275 at the time of writing) in only nine hours of its release.

NFTs are digital assets that are based on a blockchain. They are non-fungible which means that they are irreplaceable and cannot be replicated. Several people can see it or download its copy, but the owner will always belong to the one who owns it. The NFT can range from art to music to videos.

Benyamin Ahmed found inspiration from NFT collections such as Bored Ape Yacht Club and CryptoPunks where the NFT doubles as a website membership. Ahmed developed the “Weird Whales” with help from Boring Bananas, which is an NFT project as well, and his father Imran helped him as well. They provided Ahmed with a template and some code that was annotated, enabling him to swiftly produce new images in place of the ones that were already there.

Ahmed informed Decrypt: “I got interested in the NFT space because originally I thought it was cool as an online flex,”.

Ahmed told ONE37pm: “I was just playing around with code and testing. And then I remember looking at the website and the ‘sold out message had shown and that was the turning point.”

Initially, the “Weird Whales” NFTs sold for 0.02 ETH on the OpenSea marketplace. Also, Ahmed made more money with every sale of the NFTs.

Ahmed stated: “I’ve also made some money from royalties on OpenSea, whenever someone buys a whale, I get 2.5 percent of the amount of money it sold for.”

Weird Whale 956 sold on the secondary market for NZ $8000 (USD 5127 at the time of writing). This 956 NFT is currently valued at NZ $31000 (USD 19869 at the time of writing) on OpenSea.
